  • Adaptogen; helping the body adapt to stress, allowing for an increased tolerance to mental exhaustion, enhancing attention and mental endurance.
Immunomodulator; strengthening, balancing, supporting and regulating the immune system, optimising immune response.
Commonly know as either Siberian Ginseng or Eleuthero is not directly related to the Ginseng family or Panax Ginseng, but has been given the Ginseng name due to its similar adaptogenic actions that it is known for. The woody root is the part of Eleuthero that is harvested when mature to ensure its potency.
Used for 1000's of years by Traditional Chinese Medicine Herbalists, it is used as a strong Qi tonic (chi, life energy, vital energy) and so very important in the energy of the body, as well as used to support cognitive and physical performance, endurance, fatigue prevention, oxygenation and recovery, suggested that those who are athletic or physically active should use it. But they also note it to aid memory, immune function and alertness.
Traditional Russian Medicine suggests that it should be used to nourish the Immune System.

Science has substantiated some of these traditional health claims attributing their actions, primarily, to the Polysaccharide and Eleutheroside compounds that are found in this root. These have been studied extensively and shown to potentially be effective for various health conditions including; cognitive and physical performance, with the anti-inflammatory effects potentially supporting organ function and skeletal health (arthritis and osteoporosis).
Interestingly when combined with another of our products Schisandra it has been shown to potentially help those suffering from mild fatigue.
Although some people may feel the effects immediately, Eleuthero is natural product that tends to be most beneficial when consumed over a longer period, where its accumulative effects become more powerful.

More research can be found under the Science tab.

  • As with many things internet based, a lot of information is copied and pasted, has a dash of creative license, a sprinkling of Chinese whispers and boom you have a new superfood or a superherb. When we select our products we look for the most effective and the very best quality. So we research, then research some more, and provide all of that research here, so that you can make up your own mind.

    SKELETAL (OSTEOPOROSIS)

Osteoporosis happens when the bones become brittle making them more susceptible to breakages. There can be various causes including; vitamin D deficiency, calcium deficiency, lack of physical exercise, early menopause, medications, smoking and alcohol. Other conditions can also make a person more susceptible to osteoporosis such as, liver / kidney disease, rheumatoid arthritis and thyroid issues — to name just a few.

Studies suggest that Eleuthero may have the ability to potentially help reduce the loss of bone density and thus the effects of osteoporosis, and all with no negative impact on the rest of the any other functions of the body including the organs and hormones. (1)

    ANTI-INFLAMMATORY and SKELETAL (ARTHRITIS)

Studies suggest that Eleuthero may have positive impacts on Arthritis, the anti-inflammatory effects of Eleuthero when taken prior to the onset of rheumatoid arthritis, appear to potentially slow the onset of and the severity of the condition. But if taken after the arthritis has begun it may only aid in reducing the severity. (4)

    FATIGUE

Scientific trials have documented that Schisandra and Eleuthero may potentially increase endurance and mental performance in patients who have mild fatigue and weakness, as the stress response in the body was being regulated. This may be due to the adaptogenic capacity of these products. (5, 6, 7, 8)

    COGNITIVE and PHYSICAL PERFORMANCE

The adaptogenic properties of Eleuthero have also been shown to potentially demonstrate protective actions within the brain, but further studies are required. (8, 9)
In addition, it has been studied and suggested that Eleuthero — again due to its adaptogenic properties — potentially exhibits the ability to increase mental and physical performance, in some instances, this can take effect within as little as 30 minutes of consumption and lasts for around 4-6hours, and even better, unlike other stimulants, Eleuthero doesn't have addictive qualities, doesn't have a "come down", nor does it effect sleep. (5, 6, 7, 8, 9)

    ANTI-INFLAMMATORY (BLOOD SUGAR)

Studies have suggested that the anti-inflammatory and protective effects of Eleuthero could display positive effects on diabetic damage to cells, as well as lipid and glucose regulation. (2)

    ORGANS and ANTI-INFLAMMATORY (LIVER)

It has been suggested that the anti-inflammatory effects of Eleuthero may help reduce damage to the liver, primarily relating to the potential prevention of liver failure via a compound found in Eleuthero called Syringin. But it may also have and immunomodulatory effects, which support this effect. (3)

The Life of Eleuthero / Siberian Ginseng

Eleutherococcus senticosus is native to the far east of Siberia, and some related species growing throughout Northern China, Korea, and Japan. It is a deciduous thorny, creeping, shrub that grows slowly ending up around 2m in height and reaching maturity after around 7 years. It prefers shelter from the wind, but a good amount of sun (either partly shaded or full sun). Usually growing in well drained loamy, humus-rich soil, at the foot of the forest, sometimes creating large impenetrable thickets, and can tolerate temperatures of around -15°c if they are sheltered from cold winds.
Eleuthero is imported as due to the cycle and temperature required for optimum growing conditions. Panax Ginseng is currently being grown in Tasmania, but in small amounts due to cost, rotation and yield.

    History

Listed in the Chinese Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing (The Divine Husbandman’s Classic of the Materia Medica) over 2000 years ago, Eleuthero has been used extensively in traditional Chinese medicine for 1000's of years. Eleuthero is used in China to support complete health and when someone is suffering from restless sleep and vivid dreams. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the Eleuthero root is used; to invigorate Qi (chi, life energy, vital energy), to strengthen and nourish the spleen and kidneys, to balance vital energy, boost immunity and relieve stress. It is commonly used an and anti-fatigue tonic herb — a favourite among herbalists
The root is considered pungent and slightly bitter in taste, and energetically warming, linking it to the meridians of the spleen, kidneys and heart.
Sometimes the leaves of various Eleuthero species are added to herbal teas, but the roots are the main part of the plant that are used.

In the traditional medicine of northeastern Asia and far eastern Russia, Eleuthero is called 'shigoka' and used as a tonic. It has also been used in traditional Korean medicine for its qi strengthening qualities.

Especially popular in Russia as an adaptogenic herbal supplement, the term "adaptogen" is said to have came from Soviet scientist, N.V. Lazarev, who, in 1947 coined this term when describing Eleuthero's actions. He stated that an adaptogen increased "non-specific resistance of an organism to adverse influence."
In the 1960’s Soviet scientists were charged with finding ways to cement Soviet superiority, so they started to research a root called Eleuthero that grew in the Siberian forests and they were not disappointed. The soviets began to use Eleuthero to boost various areas of their progression, from use for worker concentration and productivity to strengthen their army. A former Soviet sports nutrition researcher and coach, Dr. Ben Tabachnik, attributes Eleuthero to the Soviet Olympic team domination of the 1988 Olympics, and it was also into space by Soviet astronauts, with them raising a glass of Eleuthero extract in 1967, toasting their orbit achievement! Some of the Soviet research into Eleuthero was filed "classified", as the Soviet scientists wanted to closely guard their newly found secret which was improving their performance in many areas.

It was following Russian researchers began studying it in the 1960's, that Eleuthero began becoming popular in the rest of the world. Also referred to as 'Siberian ginseng' and is often compared with the more familiar Panax ginseng or 'true ginseng' yet they differ substantially and therefore can't be considered interchangeable. So much so that in 2002, the USA prohibited the use of the term “ginseng” for any plant that doesn’t contain Ginsenosides (which are considered the adaptogenic constituents of Panax). And so Siberian Ginseng, is now known as Eleuthero, because although the actions have been shown to be as effective, the root does not contain the Ginsenoside compounds.

Eleuthero is now widely utilised in the western herbalism to support general health and to improve endurance and stamina. It is prescribed for use in France, Germany, and Russia as well.
  • Getting in the Kitchen

Eleuthero Powder has an slightly bitter / sweet flavour and can be added to smoothies, juices, soups, raw food treats and baked goods. You can also make a beautiful tea. It is great used in savoury or sweet, hot or cold dishes.

CHINESE MEDICINE

The Grove principles and philosophies are very much aligned with those of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The Chinese tonic herbalist is proactive in their approach to health, rather than treating disease, they carve a path to promote “radiant health” or “health beyond danger”. There is a similar Benjamin Franklin quote "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure". Prevention is cure is something we believe too.
