  • Adaptogen; helping the body adapt to stress, allowing for an increased tolerance to mental exhaustion, enhancing attention and mental endurance.
Immunomodulator; strengthening, balancing, supporting and regulating the immune system, optimising immune response.
Astragalus root has been used for centuries within Traditional Chinese Medicine where it is famed for its use as a Qi (chi, life energy, vital energy) tonic, said to be a protector of the body and to improve energy, metabolism, muscle function and posture with a specific focus on upright Qi (protecting our posture and organs as we age), it is also used to improve immune system function allowing us to adapt to change.

Research has suggested that Astragalus may also help; organ function (the brain (memory), the lungs and the kidneys), as an anti-inflammatory and the nervous system. Due to its effects on the lungs and energy production, it has made this root a popular tonic among athletes.
    Research also suggests that:
    - when mixed with cinnamon, Astragalus may help osteoporosis by stimulating bone growth,
    - it may work synergistically with Cordyceps with an anti-oxidative action, potentially providing enhanced anti-aging effects.

The active compound found in Astragalus suggested to be responsible is a compound called ‘astragaloside IV’ — the primary pure saponin isolated from Astragalus membranaceous — indicated to have important anti-oxidative effects along with polysaccharides, another group of anti-oxidants found in Astragalus. Anti-oxidants are always great to add to the diet to combat the stressors in the 21st century.

  • As with many things internet based, a lot of information is copied and pasted, has a dash of creative license, a sprinkling of Chinese whispers and boom you have a new superfood or a superherb. When we select our products we look for the most effective and the very best quality. So we research, then research some more, and provide all of that research here, so that you can make up your own mind.

    IMMUNE HEALTH

The immune system is responsible for ensuring that we stay healthy and on a daily basis fight off any number of potential invadors.
Research is suggesting that Astragalus has significant immune benefits, with its anti-oxidants being directly related and suggested to be anti-cancer, specifically lung cancer. It also works synergistically with active nutritional mushroom alkaloids and helps to unlock the potential of cordyceps sinensis. (7, 12)

    Anti-oxidant

Antioxidants play an important role when preventing the body from oxidising and thus put under more stress. The active compounds in Astragalus (astragaloside IV and polysaccharides) have been studied and are suggested to have anti-oxidative properties. Its ability as an antioxidant has been linked to various health benefits outlined in the following areas.
The Polysaccharides found in Astragalus, studies suggest, can potentially protect the bodies cells and their energy production via their anti-oxidative effects. (6, 10, 11, 12)

    ORGANS (KIDNEYS)

Oxidative stress and cell death are main factors in acute Kidney injury. Studies suggest that the active compound in Astragalus (astragaloside IV) has the ability to potentially prevent cell death and act as an anti-oxidant. (10)

    NERVES (BRAIN)

It has been discussed that injury to the brain may be caused by oxidative stress. The active compound of Astragalus (astragaloside IV) potentially reduces damage to the brain due to its anti-oxidative effects, studies have also suggested that this same active compound (astragaloside IV) after being supplemented for 7 days could potentially reverse the effects of depression.

Astragalus has also been shown to potentially significantly improve learning and memory in Altzeimers patients and be neuroprotective and have a nootropic effect.
Research is also suggesting that its ability to effect the nervous system is not limited to the brain as a nootropic, it also has the capacity to help support the regeneration of the sciatic nerve by increasing the number of nerve fibres and also the conduction between them. (1, 2, 5, 6, 8)

    ANTI-INFLAMMATORY

Astragaloside IV is the active compound in the root of Astragalus, and has been suggested by scientific studies to be an effective, anti-inflammatory and immunoregulator. (3, 9)

    LUNGS

Bronchial Asthma is the chronic inflammation of the lungs and airway hyper-responsiveness (super active) / remodeling. Studies have shown that the bioactive compound in Astragalus (Astragaloside IV) may reduce lung inflammation and relieved the 'super' activity of the lungs by modulating the response, potentially aiding asthma sufferers. (3)

    ANTI-AGEING

When we apply the term ‘ageing' to the body, we are essentially saying they our cells are becoming less able to properly perform their function. During this ageing process, if we then subject the cells to further degradation via oxidation we speed up the ageing process. Studies suggest that the anti-oxidative effects of astragalus upon cell energy production potentially has an anti-ageing capacity, suggesting that this is directly related to having an anti-oxidative effect on the bodies energy metabolism (ATP) and in turn making the process more productive and efficient. (6, 11)

    OSTEOPOROSIS

Osteoporosis is where the bones become brittle making you more susceptible to breakages. There are various causes for this disease including; vitamin D deficiency, calcium deficiency, lack of physical exercise, early menopause, medications, smoking and alcohol. Other conditions can also make a person more susceptible to osteoporosis such as, liver / kidney disease, rheumatoid arthritis and thyroid issues—to name just a few.

Studies suggest that Astragalus, when mixed with Cinnamomum cassia and Phellodendron amurense, can potentially reverse the effects of osteoporosis by stimulating bone formation. (4)

    The Life of Astragalus

Native to China, Korea and Mongolia, Astragalus is rapidly gaining popularity in the West. The Astragalus genus consists of more than 2,000 species. Some of the species that are categorised under this genus are also used as ornamental plants. One can grow this plant from the seeds and the best time to do so is during late winter. If the objective behind growing astragalus is just to procure the curative root, remember to harvest the root only after a period of 3-4 years as this is when it has matured for this purpose.
It is a herbaceous perennial that reaches a height of up to 4 feet, and will produce delicate yellow flowers from midsummer through late Autumn and requires moderate watering. Astragalus prefers fast draining calcareous soils with a mixture of rock phosphate, ground limestone and oyster shell, with a pH of between 5.5-7.5. Root is harvested after first frost, the leaves can be harvested anytime. It prefers partial shade to full sun, and a sandy, well-drained soil, at times of extreme heat in Australia, you may want to cover it with shade cloth.
You can grow it indoors or outdoors.

    History

Astragalus membranaceous belongs to a group of around 3000 shrubs and herbs. It has been used for centuries in traditional Chinese Medicine / Herbalism and also been linked to Persian Medicinal use.
Shennong, the founder of Chinese herbalism, was said to have discovered astragalus and classified it as a superior herb.

Huang Qi is the Chinese name for astragalus and in english this means "yellow leader,” yellow from the colour of the root and leader as the reference to it being an important one of the Chinese tonic herbs. Traditionally, astragalus was used for the deficiency of one of the Chinese herbalism 3 treasure of life ‘Qi’ (pronounced chee) and translating as vitality, the energy of life.
It is one of the oldest used, for more than 2000 years it has been used by Chinese herbalists to build up energy and resist disease.
The primary uses were to treat:
    • Spleen and stomach issue (with the symptom of fatigue),
    • lungs,
    • skin,
    • muscles, and
    • organ health (primarily kidneys),
Native American Indian tribes used Astragalus for various ailments in various ways:
    • Dakota Indians made the root into a tea to reduce fever in children.
    • Lakotas Indians smashed up the roots and chewed them to reduce chest and back pain (or vaporised for children), relieve coughs and were applied to wounds before they were bandaged. Lakota women would chew the root to increase breast milk.
    • The Cheyenne would use astragalus if you had been infected by poison ivy, for dermatitis or would sprinkle powdered leaves ans stems for inflamed skin conditions.
  • Getting in the Kitchen

Astragalus has traditionally been made into a tea, but it can also be added to smoothies, juice or raw food treats. We like to add it to hot teas to then be used as a base for a super smoothie as an alternative to milk and water. You can even add it to savoury dishes like sauces or soups with garlic, onions, carrots, shiitake mushrooms and miso.

CHINESE MEDICINE

The Grove principles and philosophies are very much aligned with those of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The Chinese tonic herbalist is proactive in their approach to health, rather than treating disease, they carve a path to promote “radiant health” or “health beyond danger”. There is a similar Benjamin Franklin quote "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure". Prevention is cure is something we believe too.
