  • FARMING

The Tulsi is organically and sustainably grown in India using 100% renewable energy. The leaves are harvested and dehydrated in the direct sunlight, then moved to the shade before being inspected, sorted and sent for processing.

    PROCESSING

When the leaves arrive for processing, the leaves are then passed through machines to have any impurities removed before being steam sterilised. The leaves are then moved to be micronised and ground into powder (the entire process is completed below 40°C). Once ground to powder it is bulk packaged for transport.

    IMPORTING

The product is then put on a ship and sails to Australia and arrives at The Grove HQ approximately 4 weeks later.

    The Life of Tulsi

Growing Tulsi is similar to growing sweet basil. Tulsi grows well in loamy and fertile soil with good drainage and a pH of around 6 to 7.5. It thrives in full sun but also grows in partial shade where it gets at least four hours of sunlight a day. When the top inch of soil is dry, then the Tulsi plant needs some water, but don't water when it's been raining and reduce watering by and during the winter to avoid diseases, when possible it's also a good idea to move the plant inside where the temperature outside gets below 10°C, placing it near a sunny window where the temperature is constant, you can then move it back outside when there is no chance of a frost.
    Fertalise every couple of weeks.
To encourage a bushy a plant, as the leaves form four or six pairs of leaves, pinch the tops off, and if it begins to flower (seeding), pinch those off too to enable the plant to become bigger and fuller.
Tusli needs to be pruned year round to manage its size and enable it to have a more compact full growth, you can do this by removing any leaves that become faded, wilted or discoloured to encourage new leave, this also keeps the plant healthy. If having a big pruning session then don't remove any more than half of the growth of stem.

You can harvest your Tulsi plant throughout the growing season, either taking single leaves of whole branches if your plant is big enough. Use leaves the same day unless drying them, as they fade quickly.

    History

For more than 5,000 years, Tulsi (also known as Holy Basil) has been revered as one of the most sacred herbs in India, it is a plant that you will find in almost all every Hindu households growing in an earthenware pot, coveted and in a central location to be admired, loved and worshipped, using the leaves in teas.
It is believed that Tulsi is a manifestation of Lakshmi (the Hindu Goddess of wealth, fortune and prosperity), who left her human form to return to the celestial abode of Vishnu (a principle God in Hinduism) as his wife, leaving great spiritual powers within the plant. And so in the mornings, water is offered with incense and flowers and in the evening oil lamps are lit in front of the plant.
Because Tulsi (Lakshmi) is so close to Vishnu when worshiping Vishnu, there must always be Tulsi leaves.

    Uplifted and clear!

So uplifting. I feel clear and calm and focused after having some tulsi. Its nice just with milk and ghee as a warm drink. But sometimes I also like to add it to my porridge on cld mornings. Im actually thinking I might add it into the mint slice recipe in their blog. So good.
