  • Adaptogen; helping the body adapt to stress, allowing for an increased tolerance to mental exhaustion, enhancing attention and mental endurance.
Immunomodulator; strengthening, balancing, supporting and regulating the immune system, optimising immune response.

Within Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Chaga is revered for its ability to promote health and longevity, while maintaining youthfulness, referring to Chaga as a "gift from god". Couple that with being referred to as the "King of the Mushrooms" or "Diamond of the forest, plus all the science and you'd be silly to pass up the opportunity to add this to your daily health arsenal. So, If you're looking to boost your immunity, Chaga is the cheeky little guy that takes the lead on the Medicinal Mushroom leader board, with Rieshi as our Queen.

Chaga (scientifically known as Inonotus obliquus), grows in symbiosis with living silver birch trees, both doing their own natural thing, neither causing the other harm - quite a phenomenal match.
The adaptogenic and immunomodulating attributes of Chaga in combination with other potent compounds unique to Chaga have been studied extensively for many and varied health benefits.

With oxidation of the body becoming a more common cause of a variety of new age diseases, it makes sense that if we provide the body with the most potent anti-oxidants, we help it fight the free-radicals more effectively. In comes Chaga with its most beneficial bioactive compounds being the high levels of antioxidant metabolites in the form of polyphenols (flavanoids), polysaccharides (β-glucans) and melanin (responsible for the dark colour), as well as triterpenoids (betulin being one of them).
Studies suggest that due to this unique combination of powerful nutrients, Chaga may help; support immune health, reduce inflammation, nourish DNA, act as an anti-viral, balance cholesterol, promote the bodies production of natural killer cells and support brain health — all of which are important when trying to accomplish homeostasis and supporting the immune system.

    Cautions

Our Chaga is not SUPER extracted, it is extracted so as to be bioavailable and enhance it's capacity to be effective when taken as a daily health support. Some Medicinal Mushrooms (and other herbs) are extracted to be very potent, causing them to be effective for shorter periods in the treatment of acute disorders, these products when taken for longer than necessary may over stimulate the bodies systems and have negative effects. Please be mindful of other products that are 20:1, 30:1 etc, they may do more harm than good.
If you have concerns we recommend consulting your health care practitioner.
  • As with many things internet based, a lot of information is copied and pasted, has a dash of creative license, a sprinkling of Chinese whispers and boom you have a new superfood or a superherb. When we select our products we look for the most effective and the very best quality. So we research, then research some more, and provide all of that research here, so that you can make up your own mind.

    ANTI-OXIDANT (ADAPTING TO STRESS)

Chaga has been classified as an ADAPTOGEN which science suggests is any product than when consumed helps the body adapt to stress, anti-oxidants play an important role when preventing the body from oxidising and thus put under more stress. The anti-oxidant profile of Chaga has been widely studied, Chaga’s anti-oxidants (polysaccharides) are responsible for most of its attributed health benefits, protection against radiation is one of those studied, others are shown below. These polysacharides have actually been show in a number of separate studies to increase when subjected to low levels of radiation.
Another anti-oxidant in large quantities in Chaga are melanins — high molecular weight phenolic (anti-oxidant) pigments — responsible for the dark colour on the surface (fruiting body) of the Chaga. Melanin is present in small amounts in the human body and is needed to facilitate a wide range of health benefits, notably the synthesis of vitamin D and the protection against UV rays via our largest organ the skin, helping us look healthier on the outside as well as the inside. Melanin has also been shown to protect DNA—DNA being the building blocks of the body and its functions—when the DNA is compromised it has potential to be more susceptible to disease. (5, 8, 9, 14, 15, 18)

    IMMUNE HEALTH (ORGANS)

Various studies have demonstrated Chaga has potent immune supporting actions, not surprising with their rich source of polysaccharides, because they have strong immune balancing properties, enhancing the body’s ability to produce ‘natural killer (NK) cells’ it makes them a perfect nutrient for the immune system. To top that, when Chaga is ingested, a range of secondary metabolites are produced, many of which have been shown to have the potential to be highly active as potent immune modulators.
Studies suggest that due to its high levels of polysaccharides, Chaga may be used as an agent to fight and/or suppress the spread of various types of cancers, including lymphoma, lung, colon and cervical cancers, whether through alcohol extractions, water extractions or isolated compounds. It's no wonder that in 1955 the Russian anti-cancer council listed a Chaga extract for use as an adjunct treatment to chemotherapy. And another well know Russian, Alexandr Solzhenitsyn (1918-2008) a novelist, historian and winner of the Nobel Prize, published the book "The Cancer Ward” in 1968,  in which he speaks about "the tea from the birch tree mushroom", its healing components and potential benefits to cancer patients, crediting Chaga with curing his Cancer. Obviously Chaga is not a miracle drug and there are lots of factors to Cancers spread, from genes to our environments and what we eat, but by boosting our bodies immune system to help fight any disease it can only be positive - every little helps.
Other immune supporting compounds found in Chaga are ergosterol peroxide and trametenolic, which in Chaga have also been linked to helping prevent the growth of cancer cells. (1, 2, 3, 4, 10, 11, 16, 17, 20, 21)

    ANTI-INFLAMMATORY

Chaga has been used traditionally as an anti-inflammatory, but science has also confirmed its use. Chronic inflammation is rampant in the 21st century and is directly related to pain, and can be the catalyst for many other health issues, and in some cases leading to depression, which makes Chaga one of the most significant tonic ‘herbs’ (super-foods) we have access to. Ergosterol peroxide and trametenolic have been shown to provide some of the anti-inflammatory effects that Chaga provides when consumed. (18, 21)

    BACTERIA (ANTI-VIRAL)

When extracted with water Chaga has been found to help prevent a virus's ability to fuse with cells (membrane fusion) and shown to be the case with the herpes simplex virus (HSV), which would suggest that for other viruses that attack the body in the same way, it could have the same preventative effects. (6, 13)

    COGNITIVE PERFORMANCE (MEMORY)

Oxidative stress is implicated as a cause for various neuro degenerative diseases, Parkinsons being one of those. Due to Chagas adaptogenic effects, studies have shown that it has the potential to help reduce oxidation of the cells responsible for causing these types of degenerative diseases. (12)

    CIRCULATORY (SUGARS and CHOLESTEROL)

Consuming Chaga, similarly to Reishi, has also been shown to aid in managing cholesterol by lowering LDL and increasing HDL, as well as decreasing blood sugar, proving that this could be beneficial for those suffering from Diabetes. (

  • FARMING

Chaga grows wild in a sustainable forest of silver birch trees in the mountainous region on the border of China and Russia. Local people carefully harvest the fruiting body by hand, collecting them in baskets, ensuring that the trees are not damaged and protecting the bark. They are then washed with drinking water and wind dried ready for processing.

    PROCESSING

The Chaga is then sorted, machine dried, crushed, sifted, dual extracted using water and organic ethanol, before being dried and ground to a powder. The powder is then treated to conform with AU Department of Agriculture importation requirements. Once complete the powder is bulk packaged ready to send to The Grove HQ.

    IMPORTING

The product is then put on a ship and sails to Australia and arrives at The Grove HQ approximately 4 weeks later.

    PACKING

Once it arrives at The Grove HQ we carry out quality control (QC) checks and repackage it ready for you.

    The Life of Chaga

Chaga is made up of 2 parts, the inside fruiting body (orange/brown colour) and the hard deeply cracked outside called the sclerotium (black colour) rich in melanin. Chaga (Inonotus obliquus) grows on trees, and the tree of choice is the white and yellow birch tree, although it may also grow on other hardwoods like alder, elm and beech trees.

After 10-15 years of growth it is classified as Chaga, after 15-20 years it is classified as being most potent for medicinal purposes, developing best in very cold regions and it also appears that the more harsh the climate and the swings in temperature, the better the therapeutic quality of the Chaga. There are debatable theories, however, about its natural life cycle and whether it is protecting the health of the tree as a endophytic mushroom or whether it will eventually act as a parasite over a period of time and hinder the host's growth. Due to the harsh conditions that it Chaga requires to grow, it is generally found in the Wild, rather than cultivated organically. Harsh climate + birch forest + 20 years = high quality Chaga.

    History

Chaga is a latinisation of a Russian word, and is a highly revered tonic fungi (mushroom), having been used as a medicinal mushroom/fungi in Russian and Siberian folk medicine and herbalism for hundreds, if not thousands of years, particularly for its ability to help humans adapt to cold harsh climates and its potent immune system aid.
We were unable to find any record to suggest the earliest use of Chaga being—as some suggest—4000 or more years ago, it is quite possible that Chaga was used during this time, but few records were kept, especially in the regions that it would have been be found and used.
Throughout history, that we have found documented, Chaga has been used by many in many different capacities on many different continents.
‘Chaga tea’ was the most common use historically — and even today — to treat:
    • an upset stomach and intestinal pains,
    • reduce blood pressure, and
    • help skin disorders.
Especially popular among hunters and foresters for:
    • alleviating hunger,
    • removing tiredness,
    • refreshing, and
    • increasing work capacity.
Inhalations of Chaga with other herbs have been used to reduce inflammations in the nasopharynx and to facilitate breathing.

The Khanty (the Ostyak) people of West Siberia used Chaga specifically for liver and heart health, and to remove parasites, in addition they used it to promote general well-being, detoxification, and to curing and prevent disease. They also used it for soap.

The Ainu, an indigenous people of Hokkaido, Sahkhalin and the Kuri islands, made Chaga tea to treat inflammations and stomach pain. They also smoked powder through a pipe during spiritual ceremonial rituals, where the Chief/leader would smoke inhale and then pass it on to his neighbour.

The Woodland Cree one of the many North American native tribes, used the inside of Chaga to build campfires as it lights easily.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine it was used as a special mushroom for balancing "Chi", preserving youth and maintaining a strong immune response. Today it is also considered a Qi, kidney and Shen tonic in Asian culture.

CHINESE MEDICINE

The Grove principles and philosophies are very much aligned with those of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The Chinese tonic herbalist is proactive in their approach to health, rather than treating disease, they carve a path to promote “radiant health” or “health beyond danger”. There is a similar Benjamin Franklin quote "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure". Prevention is cure is something we believe too.

    Amazing health benefits

Trying to find an organic wild Chaga extract was made easy for me by The Grove website. The description and the extraction ratio along with the nutritional table shows theirs nothing to hide in its production. (Unlike so many other companies). You can tell they really care about the quality and benefits to their consumers when they go into such detail about their products. And its good! It tastes mild, earthy and nutty. It's a nice and easy way to unwind before bedtime. I purchased this in preparation for a Liver detox cleanse. (Cleanse to Heal). Glad to have found an Australian supplier too. On a personal note, thanks for the hand-written welcome card. I loved the comments on what you do with your own personal supply of Chaga and beetroot powder. Will purchase again I'm sure.

    Chaga, Chaga, Chaga!

Love the Chaga Mushroom not just for the health benefits but also for the taste that I think, is very similar to a long black coffee! Also loved the recipe for Mushroom Pate that came with my chaga. The pate went down a treat with my non-vegan mates on the weekend!!!

Such little changes but such big differences - love Chaga

As instructed by The Grove I have been taking 1/4 tsp (1g) of Chaga daily, I put it in my morning smoothie or coffee, and have been for about a month. I’ve noticed little things improve like gut health, my skin and hair. I also have a lot more energy. I look forward to trying other products from the range. :)

Such amazing products and service, i’m a customer for life.

I previously purchased Schisandra from The Grove and loved it. I’d been doing some research on Chaga so purchased that next and have certainly felt the difference. I’ve been giving coffee a break and have been having the Chaga as a tea instead, I feel great all day and I’ve managed to skip the bugs this winter.

My health has never been better.

Our health is so important, and you don’t realise until your sick how much you should value not being sick. I was susceptible to all the bugs, working in the city and travelling on public transport. When I discovered Chaga I was sceptical, but I found The Grove and purchased some, there service was amazing and the product has saved me this winter. I’ve been taking it for around 4 months and love it. Thank you The Grove for such amazing products.
