  • Adaptogen; helping the body adapt to stress, allowing for an increased tolerance to mental exhaustion, enhancing attention and mental endurance.
Immunomodulator; strengthening, balancing, supporting and regulating the immune system, optimising immune response.
Reishi is a great all rounder of our Medicinal Mushroom/Fungi family, which, within Traditional Chinese Medicinal, has earned it the name "The Mushroom of Immortality; elixir of life”, used throughout history by Emperors, Taoist monks and sages, not only for the various health benefits but also for balancing the bodies spiritual and negative energy, as well as calming the mind.
Reishi is also called "Lingzhi" within Chinese Medicine meaning; ling "spirit, spiritual; soul; miraculous; sacred; divine; mysterious; efficacious; effective" and zhi "(traditional) plant of longevity”. Classifying Reishi as a superior herb of the Chinese Medicinal arsenal able to nourish all 3 treasures (Jing, Qi and Shen) for optimum health.

The Grove Organic Reishi Powder is the Ganoderma Luicidum (Red Reishi) strain, it's fruiting body grows like a little shelf on the side of dead logs, and that is the part that is harvested and we provide in this product.

    Reishi has been studied for many health benefits, for example; anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, anti-fatigue, DNA support, organ health (brain and liver), hormone balancing, cognitive performance and for its anti-oxidant potential suggesting many health benefits including having been studied in conjunction with Cordyceps showing the ability to aid athletes to perform better for longer with lessened fatigue, by;
    • the polyphenol and flavonoid antioxidants potentially aiding wound healing,
    • the polysaccharides (another group of anti-oxidants) potentially aiding the Immunomodulatory and anti-fatigue effects.

    ANTI-OXIDANT

The high anti-oxidants values within Reishi have many health benefits. Antioxidants play an important role when preventing the body from oxidising and thus put under more stress. Reishi has been shown to contain polyphenols, flavonoids and polysaccharides. (2, 5, 6, 15,)

    ANTI-OXIDANTS (ATHLETIC PERFORMANCE)

Studies have shown that when Reishi is consumed with Ophiocordyceps, the body increased its ability to scavenge free radicals, reducing oxidative stress, which is great for athletes who are at risk of overtraining or overreaching in the lead up to an event. (5).

    ANTI-OXIDANT (SKIN and HEALING)

Studies have indicated that Reishi, when water extracted and freeze dried, was high in anti-oxidants (polyphenols and flavonoids) and when applied to a wound it was shown to cause the wound to contract and increase the connective tissue of the cells—speeding up healing. The beta-glucan anti-oxidant polysaccharides contained in Reishi have also been attributed to potentially aiding wound healing / reduction. (3, 23)

    ANTI-OXIDANT (DNA)

Reishi has been studied to protect DNA at low concentrations, but be careful not to over do it, as in high concentrations Reishi could be counter productive, everything in moderation after all. (19, 20)

    IMMUNE HEALTH

Reishi's most analysed attributes – along with other medicinal mushroom’s / fungi – are their unique long chain carbohydrates that appear to have superb benefits to the functioning of the entire immune system.

Having a weakened immune system and excessive inflammation can have many negative health implications, and Reishi is a product that may modulate, improve, and protect the immune system—the system responsible for fighting off every disease including cancer—whilst at the same time potentially decreasing inflammation. Reishi's complex polysaccharides have also been shown to be significant in supporting the immune system.

Coupling compounds that may enhance immune system function and fight inflammation seems intuitive if you wish to feel and perform your best, and Reishi mushroom may naturally facilitate this—all on its lonesome.

Reishi has also been explored as a complimentary adjunct treatment to patients undergoing chemotherapy, showing that patients had the potential to respond positively when using Reishi in conjunction with chemotherapy, having positive impacts on immune function. Studies also suggest that if Reishi Extract is taken orally, it can help treatments aiming to reduce the spread of some cancers (obviously everyone is different, what works for 1 may not work for another - but every little helps, right?!).

Reishi also contains high levels of the anti-oxidants polysaccharides, beta-glucans, these are a significant compound in that they have been studied extensively in the support of immune function as well as being literature suggesting they may help in the treatment of; cancer, microbial infections, hypercholesterolaemia, and diabetes, not to mention theit activity in potentially activating the bodies natural killer (NK) cells. Beta-glucans from mushrooms are slightly different and more bio-available than those found in yeast or oats, which may be attributed to their effect being stronger. (2, 9, 11, 12, 15, 16, 21, 22, 23)

    HORMONES (IMMUNE HEALTH)

Specifically in relation to supporting the immune system and cancerous activity, Reishi has been suggested by science to manage testosterone and estrogen, in the case of both hormones, helping reduce cell growth. (13, 24)

    ANTI-INFLAMMATORY (MOOD and ORGANs)

Since chronic inflammation is rather rampant in the 21st century, as too is the correlated fatigue and disease. Reishi's polysaccharides and triterpine compounds appear to act as anti-inflammatories within the body, suggesting the possible benefits of Reishi position it as one of the most significant tonic ‘herbs’ we have access to. It has also been suggested that it be researched for the use as a natural therapy against Crohns Disease (a type of inflammatory bowl disease (IBD)). (1, 8, 11, 12, 4)

    ANTI-FATIGUE

Studies suggest Reishi mushroom has the ability to aid in treating fatigue, making perfect sense, since having a compromised immune system—giving disease a greater chance for survival—coupled with excessive inflammation can often implicate energy levels as the body has to work harder and so you feel less energised/fatigued. So by looking beyond fatigue as the symptom and paying attention to the cause, invariably the fatigue may be rectified. :) (2, 15)

    ORGANS (BRAIN / NOOTROPIC)

Studies suggest that when incorporated in the diet, Reishi can have positive impacts in the function of the brain. (6, 10)

    CIRCULATORY (SUGARS and CHOLESTEROL)

Adding Reishi spore powder to the diet has also been shown to aid in managing cholesterol and blood sugar. This could be beneficial for those suffering from type 2 Diabetes. (7, 15)

    CIRCULATORY (ANTI-MICROBIAL)

Our lives are surrounded by microbes, they are tiny (microorganisms) which cause disease and fermentation—some good, some not so good. Obviously the not so good ones we want to keep in check for optimum health. The high anti-oxidant activity in water extracted Reishi have been shown to protect against blood oxidation, supporting its traditional use as an anti-microbial. (More tea vicar - in our best English Dawn French-esk accent?!) (1, 15)

No wonder the Chinese, Vietnamese and Japanese all call it the Supernatural Mushroom.

  • FARMING

The Reishi Mushroom is organically and sustainably grown in China’s eastern Changbai Mountain province. In perfectly managed temperature and humidity. The fruiting body is then carefully harvested with scissors and washed with drinking water ready for processing.

    PROCESSING

The Reishi is then sorted, machine dried, crushed, sifted, dried and ground to a powder. The powder is then treated to conform with AU Department of Agriculture importation requirements. Once complete the powder is bulk packaged ready to send to The Grove HQ.

    IMPORTING

The product is then put on a ship and sails to Australia and arrives at The Grove HQ approximately 4 weeks later.

    PACKING

Once it arrives at The Grove HQ we carry out quality control (QC) checks and repackage it ready for you.

    The Life of Reishi

Reishi grows in dead trees, producing the spectacular red fruiting bodies that we consume. It is quite possibly one of the most powerful tonic ‘herbs’ we have access to, and just so happens to be one of the safest foods in the world. Plus, because Reishi grows on dead logs, it can easily be grown organically and accredited.
At The Grove we have gone to great lengths to obtain the highest quality Reishi product for you, our Reishi has been grown in China as close as possible to how nature intended, and carries the USDA Organic certification for growing, harvesting and processing.
Reishi has to be imported as it cannot be grown in Australia due to laws surrounding specific Fungi, there are also strict rules regarding its importation, see below for full details.

    History

Reishi is one of the oldest medicinal mushrooms in the Chinese medicinal world. Studied extensively with many varieties, names, stories and fables in its honour. But one thing that has been constant throughout history is its immune function and incredible healing properties.
It is said that the Chinese first recorded this mushroom as ‘zhi’ during the warring states period (475-221 BCE) where—in the book of han—it was referred to as the ‘Mushroom of Immortality; elixir of life’. Emperors would send out parties in search of this great mushroom—but it was scarce—making it (when found) used primarily by royalty and the wealthy.
The book Shennong bencao jing (devine farmers classic of pharmaceuticals) written by the legendary inventor of agriculture—Shennong—defines ‘zhi’ into 6 categories of colour which were believed to benefit the bodies ‘Qi’ (life force) in different capacities:
    • qingzhi (green mushroom) = liver
    • chizhi (red mushroom) = heart
    • haungzhi (yellow mushroom) = spleen
    • baizhi (white mushroom) = lung
    • heizhi (black mushroom) = kidney
    • zizhi (purple mushroom) = essence
In 1596 Shennongs 6 ‘zhi’ categories were referenced again by Li Shizhen in his book where he classified Zhe as Xiancao (immortality herbs), and described chizhi as:

“It positively affects the life-energy, or Qi of the heart, repairing the chest area and benefiting those with a knotted and tight chest. Taken over a long period of time, agility of the body will not cease, and the years are lengthened to those of the Immortal Fairies.”

Who doesn't want to feel like an immortal fairy!? :)
(Another classic and famous Chinese fairy tale ‘the white snake’ depicts Reishi as the ultimate healing and spiritual herb).

The first record of this mushroom as the ‘Lingzhi’ Mushroom in Chinese, appears to have been first recorded during the Eastern Han Dynasty (206 BCE-220 CE).
The word ‘Lingzhi’ is made up of 2 elements in Chinese:
    • Ling spirit, spiritual, soul, miraculous, sacred, divine, mysterious, efficacious, effective.
    • Zhi plant of longevity, fungus, seed, branch, mushroom, excrescence
Because of the varying Chinese meanings of ling and zhi, it makes the english translation difficult, but some have included:
    • Possessed of Soul Power,
    • Herb of Spiritual Potency,
    • Numinous Mushroom,
    • Devine Mushroom,
    • Devine Fungus,
    • Magic Fungus,
    • Marvellous fungus, and the last one which is most commonly used or heard today,

    • Mushroom of Immortality.

The word ‘Reishi’ appears to be a Sino-Japanese language meaning ‘Immortality Plant’—there’s immortality again. Chinese differentiates the different Ganoderma species into 2 groups:
    • Chizhi = red mushroom (Ganoderma luicidum)

    • Zizhi = purple mushroom (Ganoderma japoncium)

Within science the multiple species of Lingzhi are categorised as Ganoderma Luicidum, and Scientists are still currently researching the differences between the various kinds/species.

This ‘magic’ reishi mushroom has also been depicted in art.

  • Getting in the Kitchen

There are many ways to consume tonic mushrooms. Traditionally, they are made into a tea with hot water. We add the powder to our coffees, smoothies, chocolate, raw snacks and even our soups!

CHINESE MEDICINE

The Grove principles and philosophies are very much aligned with those of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The Chinese tonic herbalist is proactive in their approach to health, rather than treating disease, they carve a path to promote “radiant health” or “health beyond danger”. There is a similar Benjamin Franklin quote "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure". Prevention is cure is something we believe too.

    Best Quality!

I received the grove's thoughtfully wrapped package yesterday with great anticipation. I had been plagued by anxiety and a feeling of ungroundedness which I know good Reishi can help heal. After two cups of hot water, 1/2 tsp maca and honey with 1g of Reishi extract each I was feeling my old self again. I organised my apartment, went for a walk, planned the coming day, had a deep sleep and went for a run in the morning. I really want the grove to succeed as we need this quality OF healing foods to be widely available in order to succeed as a society.
