Quite the super-berry.

  • Camu Camu's main claim to fame is its high levels of Vitamin C (approx. 4.5%), containing one of the highest concentrations of Vitamin C in the natural world, sometimes higher than the Acerola Cherry or recently discovered Kakadu Plum. Studies into the Vitamin C content of Camu Camu, have found that the concentration is directly related to the location, and where Camu Camu is grown in Peru is paramount to obtaining its high levels of Vitamin C.

Camu Camu also synergises well with Tonic / Medicinal Mushrooms — by having the potential of making the immune-modulating polysaccharides easier to absorb, it has the same effects with Matcha Green Tea, where the Vitamin C aids the absorption of the Catechin's (anti-oxidants) found in the Matcha. in conjunction with it’s own intrinsic effect upon the immune system as well as containing potent anti-oxidative compounds; anthocyanins, flavanols and flavonols. Phenomenal little berry.

The Grove Camu Camu is Fair Trade, Organic and sustainably grown before it is processed into the whole powder we provide you here, nothing is missing, nothing has been removed — you get the very best it has to offer, with all the health benefits.

  • As with many things internet based, a lot of information is copied and pasted, has a dash of creative license, a sprinkling of Chinese whispers and boom you have a new superfood or a superherb. When we select our products we look for the most effective and the very best quality. So we research, then research some more, and provide all of that research here, so that you can make up your own mind.

    ANTI-OXIDANT AND ANTI-INFLAMMATORY

The entire Camu Camu berry has been suggested to have anti-oxidant properties, from flesh and skin to seed. Studies also suggesting that dried Camu Camu powder may infact have higher anti-oxidative capacity than that of fresh fruit. Many studies have been performed on anthocyanins, which are potent anti-oxidants and present in Camu Camu.
Studies have suggested that Camu Camu may act a potent anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory, specifically identifying its Vitamin C content as the key active compound measured and responsible, comparing the results with supplemental Vitamin C.
In doing so, they also found that this natural source of Vitamin C is more effective than supplementing with the powdered or tablet Vitamin C (ascorbic acid), this has been suggested to be due to various potential factors. (1, 2, 3, 4, 5)
    Camu Camu also contains:
    • carotenoids and anthocyanines (anti-oxidants),
    • potassium (helps the absorption of Vitamin C),
PLUS, unidentified compounds that are acting as anti-oxidants, anti-inflammatories and may infact aid absorption or interaction in the body — further studies will need to carried out to confirm the specifics as to how and why.
(But for now, we know Camu Camu is the bees knees, and whatever the reason, it just goes to show that eating real/whole food (in most cases) rather than supplementing with extracts ensures that you are obtaining the best from what you are consuming.)

    ANTI-INFLAMMATORY

Camu Camu has been shown to be a potent anti-inflammatory by potentially preventing the cells of the body from being damaged (through genotoxicity).

The anti-inflammatory effects have also been suggested to be due to containing betulinic acid which is known as an anti-inflammatory triterpenoid (triterpenoids are also found in large quantities in Medicinal Mushrooms. (2, 5, 8)

    ANTI-OXIDANT (MALE FERTILITY)

When Maca (Lipdium meyenii) and Camu Camu are taken together they have been suggested to increase the ability of the male testes to be more productive. This is said to be done via the anti-oxidants in Camu Camu potentially improving the overall process of sperm production (spermatogenesis) and the Maca aiding the release of sperm (spermiation). Which means that it may be a useful natural tool to aid male fertility if administered at the right time. (7)

    OBESITY

Studies have been performed and indicate that Camu Camu has the ability to reduce fat deposits caused by diet related obesity. (3c, 9)

    ORGANS (LIVER)

Liver injury has been shown to potentially be reduced by consuming Camu Camu due to its anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative response when consumed. (3c, 6)

    The Life of Camu Camu

Native to Columbia, Ecuador, Bolivia, Brasil and Peru. Camu Camu (Mycaria Dubia, also known as camucamu, cacari, or camocamo) is a a small tree that grows near the river in the Amazon Rainforest, especially along waterways known as abandoned oxbow lakes, the rivers flooding annually to bring nutrients to the soil, with the trees surviving for extended periods submerged (sometimes over 5 months), both the roots and tops. Abundant rains continue nourish the growth of small fruits that take years for the tree to become mature enough to bear fruit, once ready, they are hand harvested by families who have settled along rivers and expertly direct their canoes to collect them.

The trees can grow up to 3-5m tall, they flower at the end of the dry season, with little white flowers and produce fruit at the peak of the rainy season, the fruit can be 1 to 3cm in diameter with a purple red skin and yellow flesh.

The Grove Organic Camu Camu, is cultivated by farmers who are registered with the World Fair Trade Organisation and certified Organic with the USDA and EU by the Control Union. Through this they receive technical, social and financial assistance to ensure that they are able to continue to provide a consistent, quality product.

    History

The history of the Camu Camu berry is limited and was listed as being used — almost exclusively — as fish bait and a convenient source of firewood. And although recorded medical uses are rare, it was used widely in local Amazonian Indian folk medicine for 100's of years for rheumatism, toothache, promoting energy and vitality, clearing lungs, sinuses and nasal passages, constipation, promoting a healthy heart, treatment for infection, longevity and circulation.
They even used the bark of the tree in a poultice and applied it to wounds to prevent infection, remove inflammation and soreness. The bark was also used in a decoction for rheumatism.

In the 1950's Peru's Health department performed a study and discovered that its significantVitamin C content, leading to the rest of the world becoming aware of its health benefits.

Due to the growing location of Camu Camu and the harvesting period being during the wet months were the areas it grows are flooded making it difficult to harvest. Meant that the export of Camu Camu was commercially exported. Meaning that this initiative didn't take off as easily or quickly as the government had first hoped. In the 1990's its exportation and viability as a commercial crop began to take off. In 1996 a Peruvian government reforestation initiative saw a 500 hectare environmentally friendly plantation project established to aid local communities incomes and reduce poverty.

Due to extensive harvesting of this wild camu camu the government have been monitoring the wild crops and hope to keep it off the endangered species list, as it is still an important / staple food source for fish during the flood season.
Camu Camu is still a relatively new discovery by the western world, but has taken off in many countries, Australia being one of them.
Japan - use it in multivitamins, energy drinks, sport drinks and candles.
South America use it to treat herpes simplex, shingles and alleviate the side effects of anti-depressants.
  • Getting in the Kitchen

Camu Camu has a tangy citrus flavour and can be used to flavour ice-cream, sweets, yoghurts, smoothies and juices. For a drink with a bit more punch, dissolve a teaspoon to a glass of water with (or without) sweetener. You can also add it to Medicinal Mushroom creations and Matcha tea to aid the absorption of various anti-oxidant compounds including Catechins and Polysaccharides.
You could also add it to healthy treats and snacks to simple boost the Vitamin C content.
