  • As with many things internet based, a lot of information is copied and pasted, has a dash of creative license, a sprinkling of Chinese whispers and boom you have a new superfood or a superherb. When we select our products we look for the most effective and the very best quality. So we research, then research some more, and provide all of that research here, so that you can make up your own mind.

Organic; Reishi, Chaga and the Cordyceps family have a very impressive line up of health benefits, below are the most prominent, but for further details, head over to their individual product pages.

Having a weakened immune system and excessive inflammation can have many negative health implications, all Medicinal Mushrooms have been studied to suggest that they help modulate, improve, and protect the immune system—the system responsible for fighting off every disease—whilst at the same time potentially decreasing inflammation. Coupling compounds that may enhance immune system function and fight inflammation seems intuitive if you wish to feel and perform your best, Reishi, Chaga and Ophiocordyceps may naturally facilitate this—all on their lonesome—when combined it would suggest a winning combination.
Many studies have been performed surrounding the benefits of Medicinal Mushrooms and their ability to slow the growth or spread of various cancerous tumours, obviously science is still very active in researching the potential benefits for this terrible disease, but current studies suggest that Reishi, Chaga and Ophiocordyceps may potentially help as an adjunct treatment to: lymphoma, lung, colon, cervical, breast, prostate, and skin.

Antioxidants play an important role when preventing the body from oxidising and thus put under more stress. The high anti-oxidants values within Reishi, Chaga and Ophiocordyceps contribute to many health benefits. Recent studies (2015) suggest that the anti-oxidant levels of Chaga and Ophiocordyceps actually increase when subjected to low levels of gamma irradiation.

Studies also show that when Ophiocordyceps and Reishi are supplemented in the diet over a 3 month period, the male hormone (testosterone) and the stress hormone (cortisol) ratios changed, which is great for athletes who are at risk of over-training or overreaching in the lead up to an event. Further studies suggest that supplementation with Ophiocordyceps can improve:
    • exercise performance by increasing the metabolism as well as extending the time before becoming out of breath.
    • endurance by lowering fatigue.

Oxidative stress is implicated as a cause for various neuro degenerative diseases. Studies have shown that Chagas adaptogenic effects help in reducing the oxidation of the cells responsible for causing these types of degenerative diseases. Reishi has also been shown to potentially have positive impacts on brain function.

Due to the adaptogenic and immunomodulating qualities of Reishi and Ophiocordyceps, studies have shown that they may have the ability to aid the treatment of fatigue and depression—which often come hand in hand. This makes perfect sense, since having a compromised immune system coupled with excessive inflammation requires the body to work harder and thus you to feel less energised/fatigued. Once fatigued you are then less functional, mentally and physically, chronic fatigue can potentially lead to depression. Obviously fatigue is not caused or solved by one thing, but by looking beyond fatigue as the symptom and paying attention to the cause, invariably the fatigue could be helped and so could depression (that age old saying "prevention is cure").

Ophiocordyceps similarly to the other medicinal mushrooms, has also been shown to aid in the management of blood sugar, proving that this could be beneficial for those suffering from Diabetes. The fermented variety of Ophiocordyceps has been suggested to have anti-diabetic agents that may help those at risk. It has also been studied to suggest that Ophiocordyceps may help reduce diabetic induced endothelial dysfunction by reducing oxidative stress. (8, 18)

Studies suggest that when consuming all of these Mushroom/Fungi individually, they have the ability to maintain balance of the blood sugar, proving that this could be beneficial for those suffering from Diabetes. Chaga has been shown to manage cholesterol by lowering your bad cholesterol 'LDL' and increasing the good cholesterol 'HDL'.

The Reishi Mushroom is organically and sustainably grown in China’s eastern Changbai Mountain province.
Chaga grows wild in a sustainable forest of silver birch trees in the mountainous region on the border of China and Russia.
The Cordyceps is cultivated sustainably and then liquid fermented (without grains or starches).

Each products is sorted, sifted, extracted, powdered (as specified in each products information) and blended. Once complete the powder is bulk packaged ready to send to The Grove HQ.

The product is then put on a ship and sails to Australia and arrives at The Grove HQ approximately 4 weeks later.

Once each products arrives at The Grove HQ we carry out quality control (QC) checks and repackaged ready for you.

    The Life of Reishi

Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) grows in dead trees, producing the spectacular red fruiting bodies that we consume. It is quite possibly one of the most powerful tonic ‘herbs’ we have access to, and just so happens to be one of the safest foods in the world. Plus, because Reishi grows on dead logs, it can easily be grown organically and accredited. At The Grove we have gone to great lengths to obtain the highest quality Reishi product for you, our Reishi has been grown in China as close as possible to how nature intended, and carries the USDA Organic certification for growing, harvesting and processing.

    The Life of Chaga

Chaga (Inonotus obliquus) grows on trees, and the tree of choice is the white and yellow birch tree, although it may also grow on other hardwoods like alder, elm and beech trees.
After 10-15 years of growth it is classified as Chaga, after 15-20 years it is classified as being most potent for medicinal purposes, developing best in very cold regions and it also appears that the more harsh the climate and the swings in temperature, the better the therapeutic quality of the Chaga. Harsh climate + birch forest + 20 years = high quality Chaga!

    The Life of Cordyceps

Cordyceps sinensis (Ophiocordyceps) fungus infects a host, usually insects or arthropods making it entomopathogenic, the mycelium invades the host in late autumn, the host will then hibernate for winter, when early summer comes around the mycelium replaces the host tissue, growing a fruiting body/stroma from the host (also called “the grass”)—leading to the Chinese/Tibetan name Winter-worm Summar-Grass. This wild fungus grows only in high-altitude regions of about 3800 m above sea level, in cold, grassy, alpine meadows of the Himalayan mountains and is expensive (more than $500USD per gram), so our product is fermented for better yield.

    History of Reishi

It is said that the Chinese first recorded this mushroom as ‘zhi’ during the warring states period (475-221 BCE) where—in the book of han—it was referred to as the ‘Mushroom of Immortality; elixir of life’.
Emperors would send out parties in search of this great mushroom—but it was scarce—making it (when found) used primarily by royalty and the wealthy.

    History of Chaga

Throughout history, that we have found documented, Chaga has been used by many in many different capacities on many different continents.
‘Chaga tea’ was the most common use historically—and even today.

    History of Cordyceps

Cordyceps is a family of around 400 species, Cordyceps Sinensis was renamed Ophiocordyceps in 2007, after it was found not to belong to the main family of Cordyceps. The name Cordyceps derives from the greek word "kordyle" meaning “club", and the latin "ceps" meaning “head".
The origin of Cordyceps still appears to be a little mysterious, with many stories yet no factual evidence that we could find to substantiate them (feel free to send us your findings if you come across any).

The Grove principles and philosophies are very much aligned with those of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The Chinese tonic herbalist is proactive in their approach to health, rather than treating disease, they carve a path to promote “radiant health” or “health beyond danger”. There is a similar Benjamin Franklin quote "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure". Prevention is cure is something we believe too.

Those who take medicine and neglect their diet waste the skill of the physician — Chinese Proverb
